One of the most common mistakes I see people make when they enter the ebook industry is trying to market an ebook too early.

You can see many of these types of businesses – if that’s what they are! They slap together a handful of impersonal posts (probably picked from an article directory) and then they (heavily) promote an ebook – be it their own or as an affiliate.

Why This is All Wrong

The Internet has been a revolution. It has totally changed the way business – of all sizes – interact with their potential customers.

In today’s online business world, it’s all about building credibility and creating relationships with your (potential) customers.

And don’t expect building credibility to be a quick process. It doesn’t just happen within a 7-day eCourse!

Sorry, in this instance you have to put in the hard yards. You need to provide high quality of content, you’ve got to continually deliver excellent free resources and you’ve got to be consistent.

It’s the Consistency Factor

Consistency is much underrated when talking about building credibility.

Consistency means developing an eye-catching blog; it means postings on a regular schedule … it really means delivering the goods, consistently.

My advise to those wanting to get into the eBook business – and it is a great business to be in – is to blog first and think about an ebook later.

Put simply, earn the right to sell your eBook to your selected market segment.

When I start a blog I go through a routine – a system you may call it: Upload the WordPress files, create a mySQL database, play with a theme, add in my core set of plugins and so on. It’s become second nature.

I then tweak all my WordPress settings (the same ones all the time) and then I head out on a tried and true adventure…

The Blogs I Go To to Develop The eBook Agency…

Why should I reinvent the wheel when it’s all there for the taking – or in my case, for the reading.

My Number One port of call is Smashing Magazine. This site continually provides awesome content, usually long lists of fonts, icons, web design etc., I always get inspired and creative when visiting SmashingMagazine.

I also have a swipe file for headlines and yep, you coulda guessed it: Smashing Magazine gets a good run in it. :-)

And off we go to my second port of call…

ProBlogger.net is almost a no-brainer. I have been reading this blog since I first started blogging (back in late ’04). Darren Rowse – a fellow Aussie – is a master at communicating and building a community. Evergreen posts are the one’s I’m mainly after. Being away from blogging for a year or so, reading these posts gets you back in that blogging mode.

And then it’s off to CopyBlogger, Brian Clark’s contribution to good blog copy writing. I use this blog quite a bit. Although not as much these days – I have saved all their relevant posts (and there are many) of writing copy for the web, writing headlines etc. – and another swipe file inductee. :-)

I must say that I especially enjoy Sonia Simone’s writing at Copyblogger – she seems to have taken over most of the writing there as Brian goes off with his many launches.

Daniel Scocco’s Daily Blog Tips, the collective writers at Blogging Tips and Weblog Tools Collection are also on my constant radar.

And finally, WebWorkerDaily provides a nice mix of posts.

Am I missing something? Is there a “Must Read” blog out there that I’ve missed … let me know.

And away we go … Post Number one, where I tell you all about this blog, myself, my aspirations, my hopes and dreams…

We’ll let’s first get to first base first, eh!

The eBook Agency is a business idea I have been playing around with for about 2 years now.

I’m very much into eBooks having ghostwritten and consulted on more than a dozen titles for clients who went on to sell a combined 10,000+ units. Not bad!

And I really, 100% believe this: Anybody that has the patience to build up a credible business (ideally via a blog) can do the same: I’ve seen introverts sell 1,500 units of their ebook at $24.95 each. You do the numbers. Impressive…

I believe that with some knowledge, some planning, research and taking that first step, anybody can produce successful ebooks. And this is what this blog is all about – helping you to create successful and profitable ebooks.

I’m no guru or sort after expert. You won’t see me doing rigid, paint-by-the-numbers ebook formulas here … I’m passionate about ebooks. This is gonna be a conversation. Yes, there are good systems and processes that when implemented will help your ebook business grow – and I’ll be showing you some of them here – but it’s the passion that I’m after … If you just want to paste together a quickie ebook and do one of those product launches and rake in the big bucks (you’d be surprised!) then this is not the place for you: move along, thank you.

I’m abstract in my thinking and I look at the world laterally. I take my time to observe – see what works, what doesn’t and then go for it.

But at the end of the day, we can talk and talk and talk … but it’s taking that first step, an action that will get you to where you want.

I hope you share in my enthusiasm and hope you enjoy the ride.
